NYSSMA, the New York State School Music Association, advances music education across the state for student musicians from elementary through high school. Whether they sing or play piano, strings, winds, brass, or percussion, they can participate in NYSSMA evaluations.
Students register through their school music programs for festivals held at local schools and colleges within the fifteen NYSSMA zones. During the evaluation, they perform a solo piece from the official NYSSMA Manual, play required scales based on their level, and sight-read a short piece of music they’ve never seen before.
Solos range from Level 1 (easiest) to Level 6 (most advanced), with scoring based on tone, intonation, technique, accuracy, interpretation, scales, and sight-reading. Levels 1–4 are scored on a 28-point scale, and Levels 5–6 on a 100-point scale.
High scores can qualify students for honors ensembles: All-County for top local performers, Area All-State for outstanding regional musicians (top students from 5–6 counties in that region), and All-State for the very best across New York State. Only students performing Level 5 or 6 solos are eligible for Area All-State and All-State, making these groups a recognition of the most advanced student musicians in the state.
